An Kindness of People We Don't Know: The Way a Person I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Obtain the Position That Altered My Path

In the late 1980s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a friend. Because my companion was considering starting a postgraduate program in the Big Apple, we had planned a two-week stay there before heading to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a sizeable ten-floor structure on the UWS named International House. Once we unpacked, we went directly to the canteen, where we got some food, sat down, and started talking to people eating there.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I did for a living, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – close to the engineering faculty, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He recommended that I ought to seek a role with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that night. The engineering student came up to me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview – but immediately explained to my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where opportunities abound – she said: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for three years. One of the benefits was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his full name, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I lacked the confidence or self-assurance to reach out at an prestigious college and request employment. Additionally, I had always wanted to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

Critically, that role at the university paved the way for a role in Europe where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
