The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
