Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
