New research indicates that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals buying these treatments should be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to starting mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
Users who have stopped the medication explain a intense resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become starving," said a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
