WHO Issues Alert Over Acute Lack of Weight-Loss Injections

Less than a tenth of patients who could benefit from obesity jabs such as Wegovy are able to get them, states the World Health Organization as it issues its initial recommendations on the therapies.

Considering in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide now obese, it is urging increased and just access to this class of drugs.

Based on forecasts, over two billion could be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our new guidelines affirms that excess weight is a long-term condition that can be managed with holistic and lifelong support," stated its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, constrained manufacturing, and supply-chain constraints are major obstacles to broad availability to the injections that can aid individuals in losing considerable weight, notes the organization.

Skinny Jab Supply Crisis

Despite the current most optimistic scenario, the manufacturing of these medications might only reach around 100 million people – under 10% of the global need, per the WHO.

The advice calls on countries and companies to expand access, through approaches such as patent sharing.

A patent on the active ingredient – the primary component of a leading brand – is scheduled to end in a number of countries in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Drugs Operate

The injections mimick a biological compound to reduce digestion speed, curb appetite and increase feelings of fullness so users consume fewer calories.

Individuals usually see weight reduction within a few weeks of beginning the weekly injections.

Evidence points to patients may put most of the weight back on within a year of discontinuing the medication, as their usual food cravings resume.

Being overweight or obese raises your risk for contracting medical conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers.

Obesity affects people in all nations and was responsible for 3.7 million deaths worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
